For many homeowners, spring and summer are wonderful times of the year. It’s a chance to get outside, enjoy your yard, and really get that fresh air that you may have been lacking during the colder months. But with the warmer weather also comes a fair share of summer storms. Summer storms can be just as destructive as the fall and winter storms and wreak havoc on the exterior of your home. If this sounds familiar and you’ve now got a giant mess to clean up after a big storm, we have some tips you can use.

Pick Up Loose Debris

A good place to start is by walking the entire perimeter of your property and picking up any loose garbage or debris that has been tossed around by the storm. If there are any loose branches, you’ll want to take special care as you walk around, as depending on the size of the branches and tree, they can be extremely dangerous.

Cut Down Loose Branches and Tree Limbs

This brings us to the next trip: to cut down any branches or tree limbs that have broken and are hanging after the storm. These can cause a whole lot of damage if they were to fall on their own, so it’s best to look after them in a controlled manner. They can also act as projectiles in the next storm if they aren’t taken care of now.

Check for Damage on Your Home

While everything may seem okay from a distance, you may start to notice issues as you take a closer look. You also need to check for damage on the house, such as the roof, doors and door frames, cracked or broken windows, siding that has come loose, and so forth. Again, you want to be sure things are fixed and cleaned before the next storm has a chance to roll in.

Make Sure Water Can Drain

Water drainage will also be important after a big storm. You don’t want any standing or pooling water near your foundation – it needs to drain away from the house. This means clearing out the gutters and the gutter system, making sure the drains on the road look clear, and that you remove any debris that may be hindering the drainage.

Call in the Professionals to Do the Work

While basic damage and clean-up is something that most homeowners can tackle independently, there may be just too extensive jobs and require specific tools, experience, and knowledge to do properly. If you’ve got severe storm damage to your homes, such as damage to the siding or roof, it’s important to hire a qualified contractor to come in and do the repairs. You can visit companies such as advantage-construction.com for more information.

By following each of these tips and steps, you’ll be able to get your home back in tip-top shape after a big storm.
